PLPR/W

Twice a week all students in Primary 1 , 2 and 3 come to the newly refurbished English Room to take part in the Primary Literacy program in Reading and Writing(PLP-R/W). The PLP-R/W is a literacy program in which reading and writing are integrated and taught holistically. The English Room provides an attractive language rich environment that is conducive to learning English. Students participate in child-centred activities that allow students to further develop reading and writing skills taught in the General English lessons. As with the General English lesson students experience involves a range of different text types.

To provide for the diverse needs of all students a range of teaching strategies are incorporated into the lessons.
Reading:
Reading Aloud which involves the teacher reading aloud and demonstrating a positive attitude to reading
Storytelling involves the teacher telling a story with the use of particular pictures or objects to support students' understanding of the context.
Shared reading is where teachers model, instruct and explain reading strategies through sharing the reading process.
Guided Reading involves teachers working with individual or small groups of students with similar learning needs. Students are provided with the opportunity to practice effective strategies they have been taught in Shared Reading activities. A feature of Guided Reading is that students read books at their instructional reading level.
Independent Reading where students are provided with time for uninterrupted time to practise and integrate skills that they have learned in Shared and Guided Reading activities.
Home Reading which involves students taking home books selected by their teachers to read with their parents or guardians and practise strategies and skills they have learned at school
Writing:
Shared Writing where the teacher models the writing process while interacting with students. Students are encouraged to 'share the pen' where they contribute by writing letters, words, phrases or whole sentences.
Independent Writing where students work individually to apply and practise the structures that have been taught in the Shared Writing.
Guided Writing is conducted in small groups with students of similar ability. There is a focus on promoting learning behaviors that will support students' further learning which is necessary for independent writing.
